This Handbook contains information about the studio, classes, and student and parent expectations. At THE NEWMAN we take our roles as teachers and mentors very seriously. We are fully aware of our dramatic impact on the development of each dancer’s self-esteem and personal growth, and responsibility to present ourselves as positive and effective role models for our school. We strive to inspire our students to find their artistry, gain strong technique and create memories in a positive environment. Through this process we push to mold our dancers and aerialists into the confident, kind and passionate young people that our future will benefit from immensely.

REGISTRATION

Before lacing up those dance shoes, it’s important that all students and/or parents – whether returning or new - fill out and sign our registration paperwork so we can ensure we have the most up-to-date contact details for you. This information includes your registration form, media release form (so we can show off photos and videos of our amazing dancers in and around the studios) and public liability / Insurance contract. For questions regarding level placement and class requirements, please email info@thenewmandancecenter.com. We encourage all registration to be done through our online parent portal, but we also understand that technology is ever changing, so don’t hesitate to see our front desk for any questions and/or assistance! All active and enrolled students MUST have an active credit card or ACH account saved on file in their portal in order to hold their spot in class. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $35 per dancer ($45 per family) for the start of the 2023/2024 Dance Season, and $20.00 ($30 per family) for the Summer 2023 Season. (Starting in July 2023.) This fee covers the cost of billing, insurance, etc. Registration fees are nonrefundable with the exception of combo students who are determined to be unready for dance and may receive a registration credit for the following season. The registration fee will be due at the time of registration, in order to hold your dancers spot in class for the 23/24 season. The first and last months tuition are required to be paid in full prior to 8/28. Dancers shall be permitted to withdraw from classes, without penalty, until October 16, 2023 (dancers) October 2nd (aerialists.) ATTENDANCE

We encourage consistent attendance. We understand conflicts or illness may cause dancers to miss a class. If a dancer needs to miss class due to illness, vacation, school event, etc. an email should be sent to info@thenewmandancecenter.com or by calling (410) 897-2345 and informing the studio of the absence as soon as possible so that proper notification can be made to instructors. If your child misses a class, they can make it up in a class assigned to them by THE NEWMAN Faculty. (*Please note that most of our Aerial Dance classes are full, so makeups are not always possible with our Aerial Program.) We can not guarantee that a class in the same level/discipline/genre will be available. THE NEWMAN Faculty will assign your child a make up class, and the missed class MUST be scheduled and made up within 1 month. A max amount of 5 makeups for the year are allowed per dancer. This is to keep consistency within each and every class.

ADDENDUM REGARDING CLASSES FOR THE 2023/2024 SEASON

In the event of another county shut down, we will be continuing our LIVE classes at all regularly scheduled times through our Zoom platform. The faculty of THE NEWMAN will teach their regular schedules from inside the studio so as to keep a professional environment for our students to continue to learn, grow, and rehearse their dances for our Finale Showcase! All tuition will remain the same, and students are expected to take their Zoom classes and continue to train with their peers until we can re-enter the studio.

The studio office will contact students via phone and/or email.

INCLEMENT WEATHER: The safety of our students, teachers, and parents is of utmost concern. If the weather is bad (snow or ice), we may cancel classes. Generally, we follow the Anne Arundel County School closures. Sometimes, however, the weather and roads may clear in time for our afternoon and evening classes. Classes missed due to weather will not be rescheduled. Classes missed due to weather do not result in pro-rating.

Private and Semi-Private lessons are encouraged for dancers who want to concentrate on a specific aspect of their dancing and/or prepare for a school audition. They are also encouraged for students who enter the season late and want to catch up on all of the technique, choreography, and combos that their class has been working on since the fall. For multiple private lessons, see the solos class description.  Fees are due in full upon scheduling and are non-refundable.

Adult Drop-In Cards expire one year from the date of purchase.

STUDENT EVALUATIONS AND LEVEL PLACEMENT

All students are carefully placed in classes matching their technical abilities. The age of one student may differ from the age of another student (excluding ¾ combo classes and Pre classes.) THE NEWMAN makes a concerted effort to keep the age ranges as close together as possible. However, if a student's technical achievement surpasses the determined age bracket of the class, he or she will be placed in a level that encourages the most progress at the discretion of the Studio Director.

Placement decisions are derived from many years of teaching experience. Our goal is to place each child in a particular group or class where he or she will feel confident, in order to promote the development of proper technique, execution and build self-esteem. Some students who are placed in a higher level become discouraged, only to lose their passion for dance. Others respond to the challenge of being in a class with students who are more proficient by pushing themselves to work harder. Placement is highly individual and the factors that go into the decision are complex.

HANDBOOKS

At THE NEWMAN Dance Center we have multiple handbooks and protocol consents that we ask you to follow. These handbooks and protocol guidelines help to keep our dancers and families safe and happy throughout their dance season.  By signing off that you have read THE NEWMAN Dance Center Student/Parent Handbook, you also agree to abide by the terms and conditions in the following documents:

  1. General Health Consent

  2. Aerial Equipment Agreement (if applicable)

  3. TNC Handbook (if applicable)

FOR STUDENTS

The first step to becoming a successful dancer is making a solid commitment to your classes. Strong technique is a key ingredient and class is where you develop that technique. Come to each class prepared to learn and without personal distractions. Class time is your chance to focus on yourself, so try to leave your concerns or worries at the studio door. Dance full-out, stretch a little further, jump a little higher,  and become more aware of your technique in each and every class.

We ask that dancers show respect for THEMSELVES by:

  • Being prompt and prepared for class.

  • Being dressed properly for class in assigned color leotard, without underwear under leotards, without jewelry other than small earrings, and with shoe strings tied in a knot.

  • Using the restroom prior to the start of class.

We ask that dancers show respect for their TEACHERS by:

  • Listening to each correction given, whether it’s directed at you or another dancer. A correction is an honor; it shows you how much a teacher cares about your progress as a dancer.

  • Always say thank you when a teacher or choreographer offers you constructive criticism. Nothing can stop those students who apply themselves in every class and appreciate their teachers’ knowledge and experience.

  •  Always finishing every exercise, never walking off noisily or showing anger or aggravation.

We ask that dancers show respect for their PEERS by:

  • Keeping their hands to themselves during class

  • Waiting quietly for others to have a turn and for instructions from the teacher.

  • Waiting until the music is finished before entering the classroom if they are late to class.

  • Supporting other students’ efforts; never laughing, pointing, whispering, or gossiping.

  • Watching and learning from each other.

We ask that dancers show respect for the STUDIO by:

  • Leaving gum, food, and drinks outside.

  • Never hanging or leaning on the barres.

  • Never running in the studio or lobby.

  • Putting trash in its proper place.

  • Putting away books and magazines when finished with them.

  • Keeping cell phones on silent and inside their purse/dance bag.

  • Always keeping all belongings zipped inside their dance bag and stored away neatly in cubbies.

FOR PARENTS

We believe that children’s success depends on the support of their parents or guardians. Because your commitment to the process makes an enormous difference, we encourage you to be a part of your child’s dance education.

Our programs rely on a positive atmosphere and educational experience for our faculty and students and their parents. Cooperation among all parents is expected. Showing respect—for other parents, the students, and the faculty— makes an important impression on the children. You are a role model for your child about how to interact with others in a professional setting.

Your child’s presence at all classes is imperative. The spirit of teamwork and the lesson of dedication are a big part of our school’s educational process.

Parents and teachers may look at a child’s learning from different perspectives. However, we believe they share a common goal to ensure that every child receives the best possible training, both physically and mentally. Mutual respect among our faculty and our students’ parents provides the children with the ultimate care and education.

We ask that PARENTS and GUARDIANS show respect for the DANCE CLASS, DANCERS, TEACHERS and STUDIO by:

  • Never leaving siblings in the waiting room unattended by a parent or guardian.

  • Bringing dancers to class on time and picking them up promptly after class.

  • Having students ready for class before entering the classroom.

  • Making sure the dancer has had the opportunity to go to the restroom before entering class.

  • Asking teacher permission before entering the classroom if class is already in progress.

  • Letting us know in advance, if possible, if a student will be absent.

  • Contacting the office via email to discuss any concerns.

  • Please do not approach your child’s teacher or the director between or during classes as instructors are obligated to start each class on time.

  • Always remembering our studio is a gossip-free environment and talking negatively about others is inappropriate behavior and benefits no one.

As a parent, you play an important role in supporting your student financially, but your emotional support is of equal—and perhaps even greater—value. Encourage your child to be the best that he or she can be regardless of what others may achieve. Dance is an individual art form and children need to be allowed to achieve at a pace that’s comfortable. No two students will progress at the same rate, even if they experience the exact same training. It’s important to encourage children to focus on themselves, give their all, and be satisfied with their own accomplishments.

One of the primary goals of our faculty is to teach life lessons and skills that offer children the best chance for success. Dance education encompasses far more than technique and the steps your children learn. We believe the discipline of dance training gives young people a better understanding of commitment through learning, experiencing the spirit of teamwork, and discovering what they can accomplish through hard work. Our goal is to educate the minds, bodies, and souls of our students, teaching them the skills needed for a successful life, whether or not they stay involved in dance.

  • If your student is sick in any way (runny nose, sneezing, fever, sore throat etc.) please do not have them attend class. We will not be able to allow them to stay in the studio with cold-like symptoms.

We will continue the cleaning measures that served us well last season. Those will include continued use of hand sanitizer, regular wiping down of frequently touched surfaces, sanitization of crash mats between classes, blue light sanitization of all aerial silks between classes, and spray sanitizing of our lobbies at the end of each evening.

It is our mission to keep our students, families, and faculty safe. Our hope is that by working together, we can achieve our goal of another amazing year of aerial and dance at THE NEWMAN!

THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING TO DANCE WITH US!

With love,

THE NEWMAN Faculty and Staff
